Terms and Definitions
- Fiber Optic Cable: Fiber Optic Cables are bundles of independent glass strands that carry signals from the transmitter to the receiver.
- Fiber Conduit/Duct: The Fiber Conduit/Duct is a small orange pipe used to protect the Fiber Drop from rodents and the environment. While not indestructible, the Fiber Conduit/Duct effectively serves its purpose to safeguard your cable.
- Fiber Drop (“Drop”): The Fiber Drop is a small black, micro cable consisting of one strand of glass, connecting from the node to the Outdoor Unit (ODU), commonly referred to as a Clamshell.
- Clamshell: The Clamshell is a protective housing placed on a home or building to connect the Fiber Cable Drop to the Inside Cabling. Within this housing, CalTel will make a splice to transition the two different cabling systems. This housing also allows CalTel to troubleshoot cable issues without accessing your residence if a problem arises.
